And yeah, that to me is rather silly! After riding a 26" full suspension bike for a decade, I thought long and hard about what I wanted for my new bike. I realized that I usually rode for hours, packed it up, and went home.
I decided I wanted simple. I went with a 29" HT, and I've been very happy. I check the suspensin pressure and go giant cages. What I didn't expect was that, for me, the HT is more fun.
It's efficient, low-maintenance, encourages me to pick better lines, and allows me to stand on the pedals more. Things I didn't really do on my FS. It's been a refreshing change.
I DO use a Thudbuster, and with some larger volume besh, I've found it to be plenty comfortable. Doubt I will go back to a fully anytime soon.
I find myself lusting after steel HT frames. There's just something about a diamond-shaped steel frame that "talks" to me. But I'm kinda weird anyway If those are your trails you ride regularly full you like to bomb them and pick the rougher lines, then I'd def say an FS is the way to best full suspension 29er, especially if you like to do longer rides.

To the OP I too, just had this long decision to make I rode several FS and HT's and wasn't sure what to buy It took everything I could dish out. I was coming off of a 10 year old S-Works FS. OP, For your budget get a HT with good components. Should be able to get a great ride for your budget.
Wheel set will make a big suzpension too. Stiff lite wheels with the right tire combo can take any bike up a few notches in fun and performance. If the budget allows in the future, get a FS too. I have a quiver of bikes and each one has a different feel and does something best single speed bikes for the money little better. Usually end up with a fave but always get stoked to change it up.
Riding one trail with different bikes is a pretty cool experience! I have the means to buy either and have tried FS in the past, but I just prefer the reliability no sheared linkage boltsease of maintenance no shock overhaul and responsiveness of a HT. I have no problems racing Continental tires chicago on the rockiest trails in the mid-Atlantic region. FS frames now do not have the mountain bikes deals issues that they had in the early best full suspension 29er. Pedal bob and frame weight has been made a non-issue.
